Story Analysis/Breakdown (for UT Tyler)

Updated: 3 days ago

I'll be breaking down and analyzing, in depth, the classical fairy-tale of 'The Three Little Pigs.'

The Three Little Pigs is a story of proper planning and its execution, which is pivotal in transitioning into adult life. The story goes as such: A mother pig sends her three children off into the world to 'be independent' and as such, they all go forth and construct homes to live in. The antagonist wolf catches wind of these pigs and chases them, into their homes, and confronts each one individually. The first pig, whose home is made from unsettled straw, stands up to the wolf, "by the hairs on his chinny chin chin," by which the wolf replies en force with, "a huff and a puff" to blow his house down.

The wolf (adversity) brings the hastily built straw house to the ground...

Then, the 'second' pig is confronted with the same dilemma of 'adversity VS. preparation' in-which his home, built from sticks and more resilient than the home of hay, still crumbled under the pressure of the wolf's 'huffing and puffing.'

Lastly, the wolf finds the third pigs well-built home of brick. This home is representative of establishing an adequate (yet, metaphorical) foundation - symbolizing that planning and proper preparation will prevent poor (future) performance. While the wolf huffs and puffs, the brick home stands strong... This is, again, symbolizing life's inevitable adversities and emphasizes that if we plan and prepare for these adversities as much as possible, our plans may not so readily crumble around us in times of difficulty, but that we (and our plans) can sustain through the 'thick and thin' that is prominent in this imperfect world.

This story has a consistent build-up, with each home's annihilation being its own climax - the latter being a little larger than the former, with the final home being the largest climax before a steep lowering to the conclusive (energetic) plateau.

The narrative is fictional and child-like, but holds fundamental truths of adulthood, so the appeal is for all ages and the story opens personal narratives between parents and their children, instilling value in teaching, education and the necessary preparations for adulthood.
